Pond aeration has many benefits. Additional oxygen in the water allows the naturally occurring bacteria in a pond to more quickly consume excess nutrient that develops in the water from chemical landscape runoff, fertilizer runoff, bird droppings, and sediment. Aeration can be provided by subsurface aeration, in which oxygen is delivered to the bottom of the pond via oxygen-emitting pads, high oxygen transfer aerators that sit at the surface of the water and churn oxygen into the pond, or by fountain aerators, which function as both an oxygen creating device and an attractive pond display. An attractive fountain can be a beneficial and beautiful addition to a pond or lake, and many communities, subdivisions, and golf courses enjoy the appearance and benefits of these devices, which can also be installed with lights for nighttime enjoyment as well.
